The NHS Retirement Fellowship (NHSRF) was founded in 1978 by Irene James OBE as a self-help organization, catering specifically for retired NHS staff.  Former employees of NHS Trusts, Authorities, Practices and the NHS Executive, over the age of 50 together with their partners are eligible to join.  It maintains health, welfare and counseling support for its members, as well as being a pro-active social organization.  Throughout the network of approximately 160 branches across the UK, over 16,000 healthcare retirees are given encouragement and support to enjoy a wide variety of activities.

All Branches are linked through Regional/Country Committees to the National Executive Committee, which meets three times per year and is headed by the National Director, John Rostill, and consists of the National Officers together with a Regional or Country Representative from each of the Regional/Country Committees.
